What Is Hypnosis? |
Hypnosis puts a person into a heightened state of awareness whilst at the same time enabling them to relax completely. To an observer the hypnotic trance looks very much like sleep, but the person in the trance is alert and aware the whole time. It's not a battle of wills either. If you want to resist being hypnotized it's like resisting staying on your feet when learning to walk. You can only be hypnotized if you want to be. If you don't or can't concentrate on following the hypnotist's suggestions nothing much will happen. Almost anyone can learn how to be hypnotized - but you have to do it yourself, the hypnotist is your guide - not your controller. The human mind is thought to comprise of two levels - the conscious and the subconscious. The conscious mind is supposedly about ten percent and the subconscious the remaining ninety percent. We can picture the conscious mind as a spherical shell which contains the subconscious mind, deep inside. The conscious mind analyses information received before allowing it 'inside'. Under hypnosis the conscious mind can be by-passed and suggestions may be made directly to the un-critical subconscious. This is very much akin to 'getting through' to someone with your ideas or allowing an idea to 'sink in'.
If we want to learn something we generally use repetition to hammer the knowledge into our mind so we don't forget it.
A hypnotist can make learning, or accepting an idea, easier by getting past the conscious mind and speaking directly to the subconscious.
